
The Republic of Korea Picks C-V2X as its Technology of Choice
5GAA applauds the Republic of Korea’s decision[1] to select Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) direct communications as its technology of choice, complementing C-V2X mobile network communications to offer a synergetic platform for connected mobility.
Following this decision, Korean officials also announced follow-up measures including the revision of technical regulation standards. Since 2022, Korea allocates a significant portion of the 5.9 GHz frequency band to C-V2X direct communications i.e., 20 MHz has been allocated to LTE-V2X Direct for various ITS applications including basic safety services.
The Korean announcement paves the way for safer, smarter and greener transport ecosystem, benefiting all road users. It wraps up an extensive process that entailed a comprehensive analysis of the global technology trend as well as intensive testing and exchanges to consider the needs of the automotive and telecommunications industries, road operators, and public authorities.
Korea’s decision to opt for C-V2X, with specific bandwidth for LTE-V2X Direct, marks a pivotal moment in the global advancement of intelligent transportation. This resolution fully aligns with the 5GAA’s vision for a connected and safer future on the roads, setting an important precedent for other nations to follow. 5GAA and its members stand ready to implement this bold vision.

Following the recent publication of a technical report on the Connected Powered Two-Wheelers (CPTW) Work Item, the 5G Automotive Association together with the Connected Motorcycle Consortium (CMC) is hosting an online session on Tuesday, 21 November, from 14:00 to 15:30 PM (CET).
The session will be led by Ehsan Moradi Pari (Honda), Matthias Moerbe (Bosch), and Thomas Jaeger (DEKRA) on the 5GAA side, and CMC experts around Hennes Fischer (Yamaha), Alina Kuttler (KTM) and Dennis Gerber (BMW) who were involved in this Work Item. The speakers will present the highlights of the CPTW technical report on C-V2X-enabled powered two-wheeler use cases, mainly focusing on safety aspects.

C-V2X-enabled Use Cases for Powered Two-Wheelers with a Focus on Safety Aspects
The technical report, jointly developed by the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) and the Connected Motorcycle Consortium (CMC), focuses on C-V2X-enabled use cases for powered two-wheelers with a focus on safety aspects. This includes use cases enabled by external connectivity or sensors (e.g. from roadside infrastructure and/or network, not only V2V-based). It also covers use cases that may profit or be enabled by the presence of an external computing power, which represents an attractive potential market even with low V2X penetration.
The report first addresses the use cases with a technologically neutral description in terms of PC5 and Uu connections, then identifies specific solutions enabled by Edge Computing, Mobile Devices and 5G-V2X.

Day One Safety Benefits of C-V2X Direct
Organized by Qualcomm, Commsignia, and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, this immersive experience will showcase vehicle connectivity first-hand. Equipped with an onboard unit (OBU), the vehicle will demonstrate several safety benefits of C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) direct communication from day one leveraging Roadside Units (RSUs). As the vehicle navigates the road, the driver will receive various warning messages, including:
> Real-time alerts for forward collision and electronic emergency brake lights.
> Notifications to merge lanes when approaching a construction work zone.
> Curve speed warnings in open-road environments.
The technology is primarily focused on critical safety scenarios to reduce road fatalities. It serves as a testament to the possibility of achieving a smooth and secure driving experience for all road users.
Interoperability of VRU Protection Services via Network Connection
In recent years, members of the 5GAA have collaborated to research, examine, and test potential solutions aimed at improving the safety of Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs). Our collective efforts will demonstrate the compatibility of various VRU protection services through a live showcase. During this demonstration, organized by Anritsu, Bosch, Commsignia, Keysight, T-Mobile, LG, and Verizon, participants will have the opportunity to receive safety messages, such as alerts, which are transmitted to vehicles in advance to alert drivers about the presence of pedestrians nearby. These alerts are delivered efficiently via mobile network communication with minimal latency, thanks to innovative technologies like Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC). Furthermore, through a “digital twin” with advanced software modeling, participants can witness first-hand how network planning and performance can be estimated. Various network Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) will be closely monitored to ensure optimal performance for VRU safety applications.
Authentication as a Service (AaaS) – Static Showcase
At the core of Verizon and LG’s presentation lies AaaS, a dynamic platform built on industry standards. This platform plays a crucial role in managing the security lifecycle of V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication by offering:
> Provisioning of new services and information.
> Operational functions, including activation, detection of misbehavior, safety-enhancement systems, and intelligent filtering.
> The capability to revoke access in the event of network security threats.
The presentation showcases a V2N2V (Vehicle-to-Network-to-Vehicle) scenario, where Basic Safety Messages are transmitted via the Verizon 5G network from the vehicle to the vRSU (Virtual Roadside Unit), integrated within Verizon’s Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) infrastructure. These messages are then routed back to the vehicle.
This system protects the confidentiality of your data meeting the end-to-end latency requirements.
Smart City and Connected Infrastructure using Uu-based Solution
Verizon and HAAS Alert are showcasing a display of ”connected safety” digital alerting examples.
While the network-connected demonstration vehicle navigates the track, it receives messages from the cloud, which are shown on the infotainment screen well in advance. This gives the driver a foresight window of 15-20 seconds before encountering any possible hazards.
Passengers will encounter the following scenarios:
> An approaching emergency vehicle
> An upcoming active School Zone
> An alert for a pedestrian crossing

5GAA Publishes Comprehensive Guidance for Deployment of C-V2X Day 1 Safety Services
Detroit, October 23 – A coalition of industry leaders, including the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) and Crash Avoidance Metrics Partners (CAMP LLC), has released a comprehensive guidance aimed at infrastructure owners and operators for the deployment of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology, specifically focused on C-V2X direct communication at 5.9 GHz in the United States (US).
The guidance, developed by 5GAA, benefitted from essential input from ITS ecosystem stakeholders and partners, including the Utah Department of Transportation, National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), OmniAir, the Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America), and researchers from the University of Michigan.
The document is a valuable reference for “Day One” C-V2X deployment by gathering established requirements and new considerations, and it provides compatible guidance for several Day 1s, ranging from road infrastructure owner-operators seeking early deployment based on waivers, through Day 1 where automakers deploy. The primary target audience includes road Infrastructure Owners and Operators (IOOs), who are pivotal in taking up C-V2X technology for transportation safety and efficiency.
The 5GAA guidance report focuses on C-V2X direct communications and streamlines this complex field into commonly understood profiles, simplifying deployment timelines, and ensuring effective communication between vehicles and infrastructure.
It also provides findings from various guidelines, standards, and deployment projects to offer a straightforward guide for Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) connectivity required for Day One Connected Vehicle (CV) applications. In addition, it includes guidance and a profile on the messages that can be sent.
The complementary nature of both modes of communication (C-V2X and V2N) can deliver a richer experience for end-to-end use cases by leveraging both local short-range and cloud-based long-range connectivity.
Key highlights of the report include:
- Clarifying expectations for a swift V2X roadside unit deployment, providing concise and accessible materials for all participants in safe traffic communications.
- Identifying a limited but crucial set of messages, interoperability needs, and performance requirements to expedite deployments, ensuring an orderly and safety-critical message set.
- Providing SAE J3161 communication profiles and parameters, creating a standard set of rules for optimal channel access and message usage.
The report aims to establish V2X communications that support interoperability and data integrity, delivering the necessary performance for various Day One applications. It also offers insights into potential Day Two messages, preparing the V2X community for the next deployment stage.

United States Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Communications; Day One Deployment Guide
This Technical Report and guide originated from a coalition of Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) deployment stakeholders, first recruited from the Crash Avoidance Metrics Partners (CAMP) and the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA). This group rapidly grew to include the Utah Department of Transportation, the National Electrical Manufacturers; infrastructure owners and operators, NEMA, OmniAir, ITS America, and University of Michigan researchers.
The guide aims to provide “Day One” with a simple reference. It focuses mostly on IOOs for roads, reflecting a collective opinion that was initially influenced by the Original Equipment for vehicles, IOOs and their suppliers, traffic equipment makers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and others who want to usher the safety and efficiency benefits expected from the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

Trustable Position Metrics for V2X Applications
The present document focuses on the issue of trustworthiness in relation to position information exchanged in the context of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication. In order to start the analysis, this work has been focusing on Day-1 applications to understand the problem in the context of the current standard.
The document provides an overview of the current standards related to positioning, including the integrity of the position and confidence levels, and reviews the definitions and metrics used so far. It then provides an analysis of the gaps in the current/available V2X standard related to the confident use of such positioning information.

5GAA Welcomes the European Parliament’s Adoption of a Forward-Looking ITS Directive Revision
Earlier today, Tuesday 3rd October, the European Parliament by an overwhelming majority voted to approve the ITS Directive Revision. 5GAA commends policymakers and rapporteur Plumb for the adoption of a forward-looking ITS Directive that promotes technological innovation, and ultimately, the large-scale deployment of intelligent transport systems across Europe. We now encourage the Council of the EU to swiftly approve the text.
5GAA further welcomes the recognition of the technology neutrality principle, now enshrined within the ITS Directive. This principle now guarantees a focus on service delivery, providing a level playing field and the opportunity to reposition the European industry in the global race for automotive connectivity.
As underlined in 5GAA’s recent open statement, the industry, including the major European carmakers, is moving beyond past technology disputes to converge towards 5G-V2X, including direct communications, as the future reference technology for automotive direct connectivity and an important enabler of automated driving.
This commitment, combined with the adoption of the ITS Directive, will give new impetus to connected cars in Europe. As per the 5GAA Visionary 2030 Roadmap, 5G-V2X is expected to be mass-deployed in commercial vehicle models starting from the time horizon 2026-2029
The European Commission will have 12 months from the Directive’s entry into force, to consult the European ITS Advisory Group and relevant stakeholders to adopt a working program through an implementing act. 5GAA stands ready to contribute to the elaboration of the new ITS Work Programme.
We look forward to continuing the collaboration between EU institutions and industry to make cooperative, connected and automated mobility a reality for a smarter, safer and more environmentally friendly European transport ecosystem.

Press Release: Automotive Giants at 5GAA Unite around the Future of Connected Mobility
Brussels, 28 September 2023– 5GAA announces a ground-breaking initiative to give new impetus to connected cars in Europe, based on 5G-V2X technology including direct communications, moving beyond past technology disputes.
Ready to move forward with state-of-the-art technology, the major European carmakers, representing jointly over 70% market share[1], want to demonstrate their commitment to bridging differences and working together towards the widespread adoption of 5G-V2X.
5G-V2X includes 5G-V2X mobile network communications (already deployed in vehicles since 2021 on our roads), complemented with 5G-V2X direct communications. 5G-V2X will provide essential and advanced connected car services, enhancing road safety, especially for vulnerable road users, decreasing traffic congestion, and improving overall mobility efficiency and driver comfort.
Following the provisional deal between the Council and the Parliament in June 2023 on the revision of the Directive on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)[2], 5GAA looks forward to the EU institutions adopting the final text as soon as possible. The revised Directive will give the industry the necessary legal certainty to invest in 5G-V2X direct communications deployment, as it explicitly acknowledges technology neutrality.
The letter highlights the need for convergence and action to break the current stalemate and reposition the European Union in the global race for automotive connectivity as other world regions are making swift progress.
