
5GAA partners with ETSI for the third ETSI C-V2X Plugtests™ event hosted by DEKRA at its Automobil Test Center in Klettwitz, Germany
The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) is proud to partner again with the European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI) and for the third ETSI C-V2X Plugtests™ event hosted by DEKRA at its Automobil Test Center in Klettwitz, Germany.
From 28 March to 1 April 2022, ETSI and DEKRA will enable On-Board-Unites (OBUs), Roadside-Units (RSUs) and public key infrastructure (PKIs) vendors to run interoperability test sessions to assess the level of interoperability of their implementation and validate the understanding of the standards.
Additionally, 5GAA organises a workshop on “C-V2X Interoperability and Deployment” to bring together some key players in the C-V2X deployment and interoperability ecosystem. The workshop will take place on Thursday 31 March, from 09:00 to 12:30 CEST at the Dekra Testing Site. The discussion will focus on the future of C-V2X for the automotive industries and the role of certification for the deployment of the technology.
Participants will also have the great opportunity to join live interoperability demonstration on DEKRA’s outside testing area and discover ETSI’s ITS Test Scenarios use cases showcased by various companies.

5GAA discusses how C-V2X turns Connected and Safe Mobility into Reality at Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona
Barcelona, 3 March 2022 – The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), alongside its members, disclosed the latest global deployments of C-V2X technology, highlighting how 5G data will deeply transform the mobility system by making it safer and more efficient at GSMA’s Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona on Wednesday 2 March 2022.
The 5G Automotive Association was back this year at Barcelona’s edition of the Mobile World Congress, the world’s leading exhibition for the connectivity industry, to disclose the cellular technology shaping the future of mobility alongside its member.
Today, connected driving is a reality. Over 200 million connected vehicles are equipped with C-V2X applications sharing hazard and traffic warnings on the road. Applied to the automotive sector, 5G is upgrading revolutionary in-car connectivity, allowing seamless and cooperative communication between vehicles, infrastructure, and surroundings.
On 2nd March, 5GAA experts and member spokespersons shared their views on how the deployment of C-V2X technologies is turning connected and safe mobility into reality from now and in the next few years. Moreover, the association had the pleasure to have Peter Stuckmann, Head of Unit, Future Connectivity Systems, DG CONNECT, European Commission, addressing the participants and highlighting the crucial role of investments in 5G and infrastructures to foster the European green and digital transition.
As noted by Johannes Springer, 5GAA Director-General, the association that celebrates its 5th Anniversary has been working intensely to bridge the gap between automotive, technology, and telecom industries and promote the 5G-V2X (vehicle-to-everything) technology as a comprehensive and integrated platform for connected vehicles, embracing digital transformations as opportunities for mobility innovations.
The conference, moderated by Freddie Holmes, Special Correspondent at Automotive World, offered an overview on the broad-scale improvements that connected mobility can bring to the global automotive system, starting with a first session on the 5G-V2X deployment landscape in different regions, such as Europe, China, and the US. Speakers underlined the need for increased ecosystem cooperation and cross-border projects to ensure reliable access to 5G networks to all users. The second session focused on the safety aspects and benefits brought by the technology, including protecting vulnerable road users.
The event concluded with an insightful panel discussion on mobility data, with the participation of representatives from the entire ecosystem value chain. Panellists discussed how smart cities and infrastructure could help make data-driven decisions that inform how we pave the path for the future of mobility and the crucial role of data standardisation and reliability and new business models to foster investments.
The event welcomed, in person or through virtual messages, high-level representatives of 5GAA’s member companies Deutsche Telekom, Verizon, China Mobile, Harman, Continental, Telefonica, Qualcomm, BMW, Huawei, Intel , ZTE, Stellantis.
In addition,5GAA hosted a Press & Industry guided tour across the booths of key member companies to share their latest C-V2X technology developments with journalists and industry analysts, focusing on road safety and digital infrastructures.
Companies featured in the tour included:
- Deutsche Telekom presented the Automated Valet Parking in a 5G network use case, in partnership with BMW and Valeo, which delivers high reliability and stable latency to ensure the necessary safety requirements. Moreover, the company presented its Mobility Connect solutions, offering drivers 5G seamless connectivity solutions
- ZTE Corporation showcased its 5G-V2X products and solutions, including 5G-V2X module, OBU, RSU, V2X cloud platform and other cases
- Qualcomm presented its Snapdragon Digital Chassis Platform: a set of technology solutions for building connected and intelligent vehicles that are safer, customisable, immersive and continually upgradeable, and Auto Connectivity Platform to support ubiquitous connectivity in and around the vehicle
- Intel with its Superdemo, developed with its partners Capgemini and Advantech for their 5G Road Side Unit solution for Smart City & Transportation use cases focusing on vulnerable users protection Digital Twin infrastructure for sustainable cities
- Rohde & Schwarz showcased its 5G and C-V2X solutions for development in the laboratory and verification in the field to ensure the performance and reliability of critical automotive communications
- Anritsu presented a joint demonstration in partnership with dSPACE. The demonstration showed the use of 5G Network Slicing in an Advanced Intersection Collision Warning (AICW) use case, using Hardware In the Loop (HIL) test and simulation system to provide a realistic sensor simulation to an OBU that is being tested

C-V2X continues to drive the automotive transformation and is now the new reality
These past years have seen revolutionising digital transformations and challenging innovative mobility solutions. 5GAA keeps on shaping the new era of mobility and paves the way towards connected driving.
As individuals, in teams, and together with our members, we have embraced digital transformations as opportunities for transportation innovations. Today, we celebrate five years of intense activities, global cooperation, partnerships and demonstrations that resulted in remarkable achievements.
Our purpose is to develop end-to-end solutions for future mobility and transportation services for road safety, improved traffic efficiency, sustainable impact and more comfortable driving. While our purpose is not new, it is more relevant than ever. It reminds us that 5GAA exists to ensure future generations’ wellbeing in a safe and sustainable transportation ecosystem.
For five years, our vision has been guiding the association, gathering eight early co-founding members with the same ambition, and quickly bringing together more than 110 members from the automotive, technology, and telecommunications industry. This rapid expansion generated a genuinely global platform and connected community for cross-industry cooperation.
Members include 13 of the top fifteen global automakers and 9 of the top ten global mobile network operators. The exponential geographical reach of the association allows 5GAA to exert some influence on the connected driving stage. 5GAA is seen as a leader and enabler at a global level. It has successfully established C-V2X (cellular vehicle-to-everything) and 5G as the technology of choice in the market through numerous partnerships, bringing the expertise of manufacturers to develop 360-degree solutions for safer and more sustainable mobility. Thanks to these partnerships, 5GAA has established more than mobile broadband connectivity, integrating the multiple facets of connected mobility such as interoperability and standardisation.
People bring our purpose and vision to life. We have taken the future of mobility to a new level these past years, accelerating research and organising live demonstrations worldwide, which focused on interoperability tests. The Shanghai, Washington, Paris, Berlin and Turin demonstrations prove that a connected ecosystem holds the unlimited possibilities of investing in C-V2X and 5G. I also take this opportunity to thank our members for their hospitality and for showcasing these crucial innovations’ outstanding performance.
We have continued to stand firm on our purpose throughout the years, regularly positioning the association and sharing our members’ concerns with institutional bodies. Even though a set of challenges remains to be resolved, we hope to keep seamless exchanges with the institutional actors to unleash the potential of a connected ecosystem.
Today, I am proud to be part of an innovative and ambitious association that strives for a better future as it bridges cultural and technical differences. In this 5th-anniversary special publication, we have gathered some of the greatest stories of impact and success in relation to C-V2X in some regions, such as China and the US, as well as insightful interviews.

5G technologies are the next generation of wireless networks. It is key to transmitting more extensive amounts of data more reliably, with lower latency and at faster speeds than ever before.
C-V2X is the next generation telematics that can support new automotive deployments and build a new transportation ecosystem for the future.
The C-V2X technology is already available but to support the autonomous vehicles of tomorrow, the technology must evolve to meet more demanding safety requirements. 5G will facilitate this evolution. Its extreme throughput, low latency, and enhanced reliability will allow vehicles to share rich, real-time data, supporting fully autonomous driving experiences.
The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) is shaping the path to 5G by supporting C-V2X, as well as working to deliver innovations in on-device intelligence and integration in connected vehicles. The C-V2X technology revolutionises the mobility ecosystem and how drivers interact with the world. It is essential to redefine transportation by providing real-time, highly reliable, and actionable information flows to enable safety, mobility and environmental applications.
5GAA established C-V2X as the critical technology to achieve the level of connectivity required for V2X communication and to be a disruptive force in the automotive market.
C-V2X Testing and Deployment
Following extensive validation testing, off-the-shelf LTE-V2X chipsets, modules, On-Board Units (OBU) and RSU (Roadside Units) have been globally available from multiple vendors since 2018.
These devices feature LTE-V2X direct communications (PC5) and LTE-V2X mobile network communications (Uu). The latest generation of devices features 5G-V2X mobile network communications (Uu) based on 3GPP Release 15.
5GAA regularly compiles an overview of the C-V2X Devices, which we understand are already publicly available on the market (the latest issue in November 2021). This overview is based on publicly available information and does not necessarily include factory-fit telematics/V2X boxes directly under contract with automakers.
The start of in-vehicle commercial deployment (i.e. type-approved vehicles) has begun in 2020-2021. A significant testing schedule is already underway for 5G-V2X, the next generation for cellular technology-based communications solutions, with more than 20 trials and early deployments globally.

Connected Mobility
C-V2X explained
Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything, or C-V2X, is a connected mobility platform that allows vehicles to interact with their surroundings, such as other vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, road infrastructure, or mobile networks.
To enable connectivity within the broader transport ecosystem, C-V2X uses two complementary transmission modes.
First, direct communications (PC5) works independently of cellular networks and allows vehicles to communicate with other road users (cyclists, pedestrians or other vehicles). Second, network communications (Uu) leverages conventional mobile networks to enable vehicles to receive real-time information about road conditions and local traffic.
By connecting individual vehicles and enabling the development of cooperative intelligent transport systems that reduce congestion and pollution, C-V2X can transform how we look at traffic information to enhance travel and increase road safety.
Leading the new era
of mobility
C-V2X continually evolves over multiple releases in 3GPP. Cellular-V2X (C-V2X) is the umbrella term which encapsulates all 3GPP V2X technologies, including both direct (PC5) and mobile network communications (Uu).
A major milestone was achieved in 2017 by completing LTE-V2X in Release 14, including both direct and mobile network communications delivering basic safety use cases. In 2020, 5G-V2X was completed in Release 16, also combining direct and mobile network communications to enable advanced and automated driving use cases.
Who is 3GPP?
3GPP is a worldwide Standardisation Development Organisation (SDO) developing standards for the different generations of mobile networks: GSM (2G), UMTS (3G), LTE (4G) and 5G, targeting a wide range of consumer and industry applications. When applied in a vehicle connectivity context the acronym V2X (vehicle-to-everything) is added.
C-V2X in detail

C-V2X provides one unified solution for V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle), V2I (vehicle-to-infrastructure), and V2P (vehicle-to pedestrian) operation with V2N (vehicle-to-network) by leveraging existing cellular network infrastructure.
- Device-to-device [1] is Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-(Roadway) Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) direct communication without necessarily relying on network involvement for scheduling.
- Device-to-cell tower is another communications link that enables network resources and scheduling and utilises existing operator infrastructure. Device-to-cell tower communications constitute at least part of the V2I proposition and are essential to end-to-end solutions.
- Device-to-network is the V2N solution using traditional cellular links to enable cloud services to be part and parcel of the end-to-end solution.
In the device-to-device mode (V2V, V2I, V2P) operation, C-V2X does not necessarily require any network infrastructure. It can operate without a SIM, without network assistance and uses GNSS as its primary time synchronisation source.
C-V2X also supports V2N applications using existing cellular networks where other voices and data communications occur. V2N would deliver network assistance and commercial services requiring the involvement of a Mobile Network Operator (MNO).
Collectively, the transmission modes of shorter-range direct communications (V2V, V2I, V2P) and longer-range network-based communications (V2N) comprise what we call Cellular-V2X[2].

5GAA members to showcase the latest C-V2X deployments at CES 2022, Las Vegas
The 52nd edition of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), one of the most influential technology events in the world, is taking place in Las Vegas from the 5th to the 8th of January 2022. The event gathers more than 1900 leading companies and hundreds of thought leaders from around the world to showcase the latest technology developments in many different sectors.
The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) is glad to announce that its members Continental, Hexagon, Qualcomm, Rohde & Schwarz, Samsung, and TÜV Rhineland will participate in the event to showcase the latest C-V2X technology deployments. At their booth, the audience will experience how C-V2X will shape the next generation of mobility by making transport safer and more efficient.

5G Automotive Association Statement of Support for C-V2X Joint Waiver Request
December 14, 2022 – A group of leading transportation stakeholders filed a request at the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) seeking immediate authority to move forward with Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything deployments. Signatories to the filing include automakers Ford, Audi, and Jaguar Land Rover, the Utah and Virginia state departments of transportation, and a number of equipment manufacturers, including 5GAA members Applied Information, Cohda Wireless, Commsignia, Danlaw, HARMAN and Panasonic.
The filing follows last year’s unanimous decision by the FCC concluding that the United States should move forward with C-V2X exclusively. In that decision, the FCC invited automakers, road operators, and equipment manufacturers to seek rule waivers if interested in deploying C-V2X in the near term. The FCC reasoned that these waivers would enable a smoother and more rapid deployment of C-V2X while the agency considered final rules for the technology.
“Today’s joint waiver request from leading automakers, state departments of transportation, and equipment manufacturers signifies the collaborative efforts underway to ensure the successful implementation of C-V2X,” stated 5GAA CTO Maxime Flament. “It also demonstrates the strong demand across the transportation industry to immediately deliver C-V2X safety services to American travelers, especially as deployments accelerate in other regions of the world. On the heels of its recent unanimous decision to move forward with C-V2X, the FCC should quickly grant this waiver request and afford stakeholders the ability to move forward with this state-of-the-art roadway safety technology.”

5GAA shares the latest C-V2X developments at ITS World Congress (Hamburg): “5G will have the most revolutionary impact by reducing accidents and saving millions of lives.”
HAMBURG, 13 October 2021 – 5G-powered vehicles are foreseen to hit the market this year in Europe. More and more advanced vehicle-to-everything (V2X) use cases geared towards enhanced road safety, improved traffic efficiency, greener environmental impact and more comfortable driving are being deployed worldwide on a large scale. The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) and its members showed the latest developments during ITS World Congress in Hamburg.
5G-V2X spearheading the path to automated driving
Today, the 5G-V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) technology already enables fully connected and automated mobility with LTE-V2X technology. Vehicles and infrastructure can exchange relevant information via LTE-V2X through direct communication mode (not requiring network coverage) or mobile network communications mode, creating a real-time connection between all road users.
Many automotive services can be supported by the current global cellular standard LTE-4G, seen as an essential foundation for further progress. Millions of vehicles on the continent are connected via 4G-LTE already, and industry analysts estimate that over 70% of all new vehicles sold are now 4G equipped. That said, 5G-V2X will enable more advanced connected mobility services and offer a clear path to automated driving – while maintaining service-level interoperability with pre-existing LTE-V2X vehicles.
5GAA will help prepare tomorrow with the ITS Directive revision, advocating a neutral approach on technology. Given the strong momentum in China and in the United-States, Europe needs a future-proof framework to stay in a leading role globally. Indeed, advanced driving is taking shape globally. At the moment, China is the only country that has 5G Cellular-Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) enabled vehicles commercially available on the market. To this date, 14 C-V2X vehicle models are commercialized. In the United States, Ford has committed to deploy C-V2X in all new vehicle models from early 2022. In Europe, 5G-powered vehicles are foreseen to hit the market still this year thanks to BMW.
“When applied to the automotive field, 5G will have the most revolutionary impact by saving millions of lives and reducing accidents on roads”, 5GAA CTO Maxime Flament said. “The combination of long- range and short-range connectivity C-V2X offers, delivers the optimal setup for safety and efficiency of traffic, in addition to improving environmental footprints.” Global deployment of C-V2X technology will have a sustainable impact in the world.
In the next two to three years, 5GAA expects to see mass deployment of C-V2X use cases geared towards improving traffic efficiency and road safety around the world. Vehicle commercialization is not enough however: the whole ecosystem – cars, cloud, map, network, positioning but also the road – needs to be C-V2X friendly. Therefore, 5GAA offers a platform to foster collaboration between top tier automotive, technology and telecommunications companies for them to develop end-to-end connectivity solutions for future mobility and transportation services.
Cover more digital roads via enhanced digital mobility services
At ITS World Congress, the world’s largest and most prominent event focused on smart mobility and the digitalisation of transportation, 5GAA experts and member spokespersons shared their views on how to accelerate deployment of the latest technology innovations and how to ensure future-proof investments. They shared the needs of road operators for their digital infrastructure and of automakers (OEMs) for digital mobility services, and zoomed in on digital roads in urban areas and cooperation models enabling deployment and use of 5G infrastructures for connected and automated mobility.
Furthermore, key members of the 5GAA shared their latest technology developments with a focus on Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs), among which:
- A system that warns of accidents between and help protect connected vehicles and cyclists – or other vulnerable road users such as pedelec, scooter riders and pedestrians developed by Continental and Deutsche Telekom. The solution calculates the paths taken by cars and bicycles. If they are likely to cross at the same time, the system warns both road users via mobile communications in real-time. Initial road tests have been successful.
- A Location-as-a-Service algorithm that improves the positioning of road users, in which vehicles exchange data via simulated communication (5G) by Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS. The aim is to warn drivers of a collision with a cyclist, an e-scooter rider of road damage, or to guide a blind person to the right government office or the bus door – for which highly accurate localization is always of fundamental importance.
- A demonstration of a connected e-bike, where Qualcomm (alongside company Spoke) is showcasing a new hardware solution designed to enable vehicles to identify VRUs using C-V2X.
