Joint Technology Demonstrations with USDOT and 5GAA Members Highlight Unified Vision for Connected Mobility 

Washington, D.C., 6 February 2025 – For the first time, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and members of the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) have partnered to showcase the complementarity of Cellular Vehicle-To-Everything (C-V2X) direct and mobile network communications at the Federal Highway Administration’s Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center. 

The live demonstrations illustrated the potential of connected-vehicle technologies to make American roads safer and more efficient. This public-private initiative also outlined the benefits of interworking communication modes for a unified transportation system.  

“5GAA commends USDOT for its leadership in advancing V2X technology through government-industry collaboration, critical for nationwide deployment,” said 5GAA Chairman Christopher Voigt. “We applaud USDOT’s commitment to seizing the full safety potential of V2X by integrating direct and mobile network communications to achieve 360° awareness.” 

Participants had the opportunity to experience several use cases: 

  • Verizon showcased near real-time alerts enabled by C-V2X mobile network communications and mobile edge computing (MEC). Demonstrated capabilities included connected signalized intersection and delivery of pedestrian alerts, variable speed warnings, and weather warnings. 
  • Audi, in collaboration with Spoke and the Coalition for Cyclist Safety, used C-V2X direct communications to address safety scenarios that often result in cyclist fatalities. The seamless integration of aftermarket solutions and in-vehicle systems is a clear example of leading automakers’ increasing interest in this technology. 
  • Autotalks illustrated how C-V2X direct communications can prevent same-lane accidents: in their demo, a car swerved abruptly to avoid a stopped bicycle, showcasing the system’s potential to protect cyclists outside intersections. 

5GAA also gathered industry and government leaders to identify main drivers for deployment, such as the reauthorization of federal transportation funding. The event underpinned the critical role of C-V2X in achieving USDOT’s National Roadway Safety Strategy targets, as well as the industry’s commitment to help implement the National V2X Deployment Plan released in August 2024.  

With this, the foundation is laid to leverage the existing tens of millions of connected road users and accelerate the nationwide rollout of connected-vehicle and connected-road infrastructure technologies, bringing us closer to the shared vision of zero traffic fatalities on American roads.

The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) is pleased to support a joint demonstration of  Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and several 5GAA members.  

The event will take place on February 5-6 at the Federal Highway Administration’s Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

In partnership with 5GAA members Audi, Verizon and Autotalks, these live demonstrations will underscore the potential of C-V2X technology to protect all road users, improve traffic flow, and create a more unified transportation system. Participants will also witness how C-V2X direct and mobile network communications complement each other, with the potential to enable 360° awareness. 

This marks the first dedicated event of its kind and reaffirms the commitment from industry to support the USDOT in deploying lifesaving V2X technologies. The insights gathered from these demonstrations, as well as from 5GAA’s conference and concurrent roundtables, will inform the path forward for nationwide deployment. 

5GAA welcomes this opportunity to work alongside USDOT and key stakeholders, laying the groundwork for continued collaboration to drive innovation and accelerate mass-market adoption of C-V2X for safer, smarter mobility across the United States.

On Thursday, 6 February, the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) will host its highly anticipated conference “US V2X Vision: Bridging Gaps and Accelerating Deployment in the US,” bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the future of connected transportation in the United States.

5GAA established C-V2X as the critical technology to achieve the level of connectivity required for V2X communication and to be a disruptive force in the automotive market.

C-V2X Testing and Deployment

Following extensive validation testing, off-the-shelf LTE-V2X chipsets, modules, On-Board Units (OBU) and RSU (Roadside Units) have been globally available from multiple vendors since 2018.
These devices feature LTE-V2X direct communications (PC5) and LTE-V2X mobile network communications (Uu). The latest generation of devices features 5G-V2X mobile network communications (Uu) based on 3GPP Release 15.


5GAA regularly compiles an overview of the C-V2X Devices, which we understand are already publicly available on the market (the latest issue in November 2021). This overview is based on publicly available information and does not necessarily include factory-fit telematics/V2X boxes directly under contract with automakers.

The start of in-vehicle commercial deployment (i.e. type-approved vehicles) has begun in 2020-2021. A significant testing schedule is already underway for 5G-V2X, the next generation for cellular technology-based communications solutions, with more than 20 trials and early deployments globally.

WASHINGTON, D.C., 21 November 2024 – The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) welcomes the U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s adoption of 5.9 GHz band rules allowing cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) equipment to support roadway safety communications technologies. 

The dedicated spectrum will support C-V2X direct communications between vehicles and roadway infrastructure, cyclists, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users. It brings to closure a process initiated by 5GAA’s first petition for a waiver to the FCC in November 2018, requesting that C-V2X direct communications be allowed to operate at 5.9 GHz. 

“Today’s FCC decision will enhance roadway, cyclist and pedestrian safety by enabling highly reliable and low-latency C-V2X communications,” said John Kwant, Executive Director, Americas, for 5GAA. “Now, for the first time in the United States, C-V2X can operate freely in the 5.9 GHz dedicated transportation safety spectrum in tandem with network connectivity to provide unparalleled safety alerts for greatly enhanced vehicle efficiency and awareness of roadway threats near or far, seen and unseen.” 

The C-V2X ecosystem gains a new momentum with the FCC decision providing regulatory certainty to willing deployers and fueling the upcoming US DOT National V2X Deployment Plan, which 5GAA expects to set a clear vision and milestones to achieve the vision zero goal. 

As the leading C-V2X industry proponent, 5GAA looks forward to working with its members and the greater automotive ecosystem to deploy this technology across the U.S.

5GAA’s John Kwant Explores the Current C-V2X Regulatory Landscape in the United States at the OmniAir Plugfest

5G Automotive Association (5GAA) Executive Director, Americas John Kwant is in Ann Arbor, Michigan today to explore the current regulatory landscape for C-V2X deployment in the United States as part of a panel on connected mobility at today’s OmniAir Plugfest.

Speaking at 9:00 (UTC-4) in the panel ‘Accelerating V2X Deployment: Bridging Government Initiatives, Industry Readiness and Local Implementations’, John Kwant will bring his expertise to the table and address the state of regulation and legislation covering V2X technology in the United States, as well as explain 5GAA’s work to promote deployment and widespread technology adoption.

The OmniAir Plugfest is an annual event hosted at MCity, Michigan in partnership with the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. It is the world’s first purpose-built proving ground for testing the performance and safety of connected and automated vehicles and technologies under controlled and realistic conditions.

Today’s Connected Mobility Workshop offers a one-day technical deep dive into topics related to deployment, testing and future trends, along with live technology demonstrations and a networking reception.

In addition to 5GAA’s participation, attendees will have the opportunity to hear the insights of a number of experts and stakeholders including:

5GAA Statement of Support for OmniAir Consortium

5GAA also wishes to express the association’s support for OmniAir Consortium’s C-V2X certification programme and appreciation for OmniAir C-V2X initiatives generally.

OmniAir Consortium’s certification programme, first established in 2021, is of significant benefit to the entire C-V2X ecosystem and contributes greatly to promoting technology development and adoption.

Certified C-V2X products, such as Onboard Units (OBUs), Road-Side Units (RSUs) and corresponding modules will allow for greater confidence regarding the ability to achieve seamless interoperability of both Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) functionality for the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). As a result, stakeholders across the C-V2X ecosystem benefit from OmniAir Consortium’s work – including vehicle manufacturers, infrastructure owner/operators, equipment suppliers and software suppliers.

5GAA and OmniAir have been partners since 2019, and the participation of our Executive Director, Americas John Kwant in today’s OmniAir Plugfest underscores the continued vitality of this collaboration.

5GAA Member Cohda Wireless’ MK6 Achieves FCC Certification for C-V2X in the US

Cohda Wireless, a member of the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), proudly announces the FCC certification of its MK6 – marking them as the first participant in the Joint Waiver program to receive the green light for C-V2X deployment.

Cohda Wireless’s innovative connected vehicle technology solution, the MK6, has been certified by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which recently granted waivers allowing the deployment of cellular-vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) technology in the upper 30 MHz of spectrum in the 5.895-5.925 GHz band.

At the end of 2021, a group of automakers, state departments of transportation, and equipment manufacturers – including Cohda Wireless – jointly filed a Waiver Request asking the FCC to waive its 5.9 GHz band rules to permit them to immediately deploy C-V2X technology. The request identified a wide range of deployment plans, from vehicular deployments to widescale road infrastructure installments, that public and private stakeholders are ready to implement. In April 2023, 5GAA and its members were pleased to welcome the FCC’s decision to permit initial deployments of C-V2X technology in the 5.9 GHz band.

As a participant in the FCC Joint Waiver program, Cohda is the first to receive the green light for C-V2X (B47) from the FCC for its Original Equipment Products MK6 RSU connectivity device. This achievement follows the European Union and UK certifications of the MK6 RSU and OBU, granted in August 2023. In developing the sixth-generation MK6, Cohda has applied its experience and involvement in some of the world’s most prolific trials and deployments, including the 3000+ vehicle New York Connected Vehicle Project. Cohda is currently supporting, among others, The Smart Intersections Project in Michigan. The $20-million project started in 2021 and will equip 21 intersections in Ann Arbor with technology to track crashes and near misses by 2024.

The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) welcomes the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) decision to authorize initial deployments of Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (“C-V2X”) technology in the 5.9 GHz band to 17 entities, including 12 State Departments of Transportation (DOTs), Macomb County, City and County of Denver and to the University of Michigan.

“We have been eagerly waiting for this second FCC action to grant these 17 entities permission to deploy life-saving C-V2X technology in the United States, including the University of Michigan, which is also one of our members,” said John F. Kwant, Executive Director, Americas, for 5GAA. “This action extends the geographical jurisdiction for C-V2X deployment and represents a key milestone to achieve widespread deployment of this state-of-the-art vehicle safety technology.”

In December 2021, a group of automakers, state departments of transportation, and equipment manufacturers jointly filed a Waiver Request asking the FCC to waive its 5.9 GHz band rules to permit them to immediately deploy C-V2X technology. Following this joint filing, more than 17 entities requested waivers under the same conditions.

5GAA Applauds FCC Action to Permit Initial C-V2X Deployments

Washington, DC, April 25 – The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) applauds the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for its decision to permit initial deployments of Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (“C-V2X”) technology in the 5.9 GHz band.

“Today’s action by the FCC is an important milestone on the road towards widespread deployment of life-saving C-V2X technology in the United States,” said John F. Kwant, Executive Director, Americas for 5GAA. “These initial deployments of C-V2X technology will allow road users to begin to benefit from this state-of-the-art vehicle safety technology. 5GAA and its member companies appreciate the FCC’s efforts in this important proceeding, and we look forward to working with the FCC to ensure swift action on the other pending waiver requests to deploy C-V2X for roadway safety use-cases.”

In December 2021, a group of automakers, state departments of transportation, and equipment manufacturers jointly filed a Waiver Request asking the FCC to waive its 5.9 GHz band rules to permit them to immediately deploy C-V2X technology. In addition to the Utah and Virginia state departments of transportation, signatories to the filing included 5GAA members Ford, Audi, Jaguar Land Rover, Applied Information, Cohda Wireless, Commsignia, Danlaw, HARMAN and Panasonic. The request identified a wide range of deployment plans—from vehicular deployments to widescale road infrastructure installments—that public and private stakeholders are ready to implement.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that 42,795 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2022, a fatality rate that remains flat but after two years of dramatic increases. Many of these deaths are avoidable with broad deployment of roadway safety technologies like C-V2X. Indeed, NHTSA has previously estimated that safety applications enabled by V2X could eliminate or mitigate the severity of more than 80 percent of light vehicle crashes. As traffic fatalities rapidly increase, the FCC’s action allows investment and innovation in C-V2X safety applications that can help reverse this troubling trend.
