The 52nd edition of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), one of the most influential technology events in the world, is taking place in Las Vegas from the 5th to the 8th of January 2022. The event gathers more than 1900 leading companies and hundreds of thought leaders from around the world to showcase the latest technology developments in many different sectors.

Brussels online conference “5G: Connected Mobility in the Digital Age”
On Tuesday 28 September 2021 the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) hosted an online conference on “5G: Connected Mobility in the digital age” to discuss the ongoing challenges and opportunities fostered by the digitalization of road transport in Europe.
The event brought together EU representatives, local and national authorities, and the connected automotive ecosystem to the heart of Europe to advance the dialogue on the latest state-of-play and capabilities of Cellular-Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X), the EU regulatory framework and the importance of the 5G roll-out, and the crucial role of C-V2X technology to increase traffic safety and efficiency and achieve lower emissions globally.
The Association had the pleasure to have European Commissioner for Transport Adina-Ioana Vălean open the conference and address the attendees. “Our Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy sets out milestones for the transformation of our transport system – and Cooperative, Connected, and Automated Mobility will play a key role: by 2030, we expect automation to be deployed at a large scale” stated Commissioner Vălean.
The event welcomed high-level representatives such as Daniel Mes, Cabinet of Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal Frans Timmermans, Charlotte Nørlund-Matthiessen, Cabinet of Commissioner for Transport Adina-Ioana Vălean, Member of European Parliament Henna Virkkunen, Peter Stuckmann, DG CONNECT Head of Unit Future Connectivity Systems, the European Cyclists’ Federation (Jill Warren, Chief Executive Office), Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (Ana Isabel Blanco Bergareche, Associated Deputy Director), the City of Turin (Nicola Farronato, Head of Innovation) and the Swedish Transport Administration (Hamid Zarghampour, Chief Strategist Connected and Automated Transports). Connected Mobility In Europe: 5G Automotive Association Strives For Digitalized, Sustainable And Safer Roads In The Digital Age
Europe needs a harmonized, future-proof regulatory approach that stimulates innovation and recognizes the industrial timeline and evolutionary path of technologies, conducive of European competitiveness and fostering the development of innovative business models. Innovation through C-V2X technology and sustainability-related opportunities for connected mobility were at the heart of the “5G: Connected Mobility in the Digital Age” conference hosted by the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA).
BRUSSELS (BELGIUM), 29 September 2021 – The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) organized a conference bringing together EU representatives, public authorities, and the connected automotive ecosystem to the heart of Europe at its latest event, 5G: Connected Mobility in the Digital Age. Main objective? Discuss the ongoing challenges and opportunities brought about by the digitalization of road transport on the continent.
From the latest state-of-play and capabilities of Cellular-Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) to the EU regulatory framework and the importance of the 5G roll-out, the 5GAA-branded conference emphasized the ongoing momentum of the technology in Europe as it supports more and more advanced use cases to ensure safer roads and achieve lower emissions globally.
“When applied to the automotive field, 5G will have the most revolutionary impact by saving millions of lives and reducing accidents on European roads”, 5GAA CTO Maxime Flament said. “The combination of long-range and short-range connectivity C-V2X offers, delivers the optimal setup for safety and efficiency of traffic, in addition to improving environmental footprints. We believe the European Union can achieve its Green Deal climate targets for 2050, if only it boosts the digitalization of its roads – landing a rapid and efficient deployment of 5G along road networks.”
Starting today with LTE-V2X technology, 5G-V2X is paving the way for fully connected and automated mobility. Vehicles and infrastructure can exchange relevant information via LTE-V2X through direct communication mode (not requiring network coverage) or mobile network communications mode, creating a real-time connection between all road users. Many automotive services can be supported by the current global cellular standard LTE-4G, seen as an essential foundation for further progress. As a combination of LTE-V2X and 5G NR, 5G-V2X will enable more advanced connected mobility services and offer a clear path to automated driving – while maintaining service-level interoperability with pre-existing LTE-V2X vehicles. It is thus of utmost importance that the revised Intelligent Transport Systems framework encompasses this tech evolution for Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM) for Europe.
Connected vehicles must reach a critical mass to impact emissions reduction significantly. The Association reiterated that establishing an innovative and investment-friendly regulatory framework that remains technology-neutral will boost Europe’s competitiveness and the number of connected vehicles on the road. As such, a seamless interaction among all stakeholders involved will be pivotal for road operators and public authorities across Europe to meet their policy objectives and enable a smooth service experience across all value-chains – to ensure a smooth 5G roll-out and robust ecosystem cooperation in the global evolving transport ecosystem.

New report released to support vehicle to infrastructure connectivity deployment
5GAA, a global cross-industry consortium working to develop end-to-end solutions for future mobility and transportation services, commissioned Ricardo to develop the report to help improve understanding of the costs, challenges and opportunities of different communication technology approaches to Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) use cases.
V2I is not a new technology consideration, with research and development activities related to connected vehicle applications ongoing for over two decades. However, there is now growing momentum for wider scale deployment of communication technologies in both vehicles and road infrastructure.
To date deployment activities have been fragmented and relatively slow, due to continued emphasis on research, no common vision of communication technologies and market uncertainty, making it challenging for most stakeholders to develop suitable business cases.
To help support a greater understanding of financial viability of the communication approaches implemented in the EU and US V2I market, Ricardo transport and mobility experts, supported by technical experts from Roke Manor Research, analysed a range options which include the use of a pure cellular network system and using a combination of the cellular network with direct communication interfaces via the radio spectrum.
Using outputs from extensive research and engagement with key ecosystem players, the study weighs up strengths, weaknesses and complementarity of the different communications technologies in terms of their technical performance and costs, aligning them with the different use cases. For example, the cost analysis highlights that a pure cellular deployment approach in Europe and US is 40-45% lower cost compared with deployments that include direct communication roadside units.
To recognise the opportunities and benefits identified, Ricardo’s experts have made a number of recommendations that include increased cooperation and communication of roadmaps between vehicle manufacturers, central government, road operators and cellular technology providers – in particular with the consideration of interoperability of technology solutions. Central government are also identified as playing a key role through effective implementation of financial instruments to leverage private sector investment and support wider deployment.

5GAA to organise a first-ever C-V2X Plugtests™ event with ETSI, 02-06 December, Malaga (Spain)
The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) is proud to be a partner of the European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI) in the first C-V2X-only Plugtests™ event, to take place in Malaga, Spain, from 02 to 06 December 2019. This interoperability test is being held with the support of the European Commission and hosted by DEKRA, member of 5GAA, in its Connected Vehicle Test Development Centre, where trials will be carried out both in lab and field environments.
Plugtests™ represent an important tool to allow vendors to evaluate the interoperability of their systems and provide precious feedback to independent experts in order to improve the standard-making process. Moreover, this event is a further milestone in the cooperation between 5GAA and DEKRA, a leader in automotive safety testing, that already had the chance to collaborate during a previous plugfest in April 2019.
On 04 December, an ETSI-5GAA Plugtests™ conference is scheduled, focused on nowadays achievements and challenges in the connected automotive sector, to offer the audience a complete update on the opportunities and implementation models of C-V2X technology.

5GAA to be main supporting partner of 5G Techritory – Riga, 27-29 November 2019
5G Techritory is the annual Baltic Sea Region 5G Ecosystem Forum organised by the Electronic Communications Office (ECO) of Latvia, aiming at gathering decision makers, major representatives from industry associations, and business leaders to discuss the deployment of the earliest available commercial applications of 5G technology. Its second edition is going to be held in the Latvian capital, Riga, on 27-29 November.
Taking place in a vibrant region for 5G implementation, the 5G Automotive Association is proud to be confirmed once again as one of the main partners of this conference. 5GAA Director General Johannes Springer is going to participate as a speaker in front of an audience of up to a thousand senior professionals invited upon an attentive selection to ensure the highest quality of debate.
The Baltic Sea Region includes nine countries comprising of a population of 150 million people. Among the Baltic countries, Latvia appears in the third place of the 5G Readiness ranking according to the European Commission’s Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) 2019 report. This result shows that the potential for international leadership in the field is highly promising and this edition has all the characteristics to be a must-visit, given the renewed interest for digital and technology of the newly appointed European Commission.
Since the objective of the programme is to focus on what is readier for commercialisation, four verticals have been identified as the main topics:
- Smart City
- Smart Mobility
- Industry 4.0
- Smart Media and Entertainment
In addition, a 5G policy hackathon, a key stakeholders’ roundtable and an exhibition are scheduled as side events.

5GAA co-organizes 5G Vertical User Workshop alongside 5G-IA, 5G-ACIA, and PSCE
On 12 and 13 February 2019, the 5G Vertical User Workshop, an initiative of 3GPP Market Representative Partners 5GAA, 5G-IA, 5G-ACIA and PSCE, was organised as a collaborative event for strategic dialogue between industries and 3GPP by exchanging on future needs and upcoming cellular standard developments. The workshop as a result, aimed to produce a report shared directly to 3GPP Project Coordination Group (PCG) as a mean to stimulate and facilitate greater involvement of the 5G Vertical Users in the 3GPP process.
The workshop held in Brussels brought together a host of experts from 5G standardization and a number vertical industries hoping to harness 5G including Automotive, Public Safety, Industry Automation, Utilities, Broadcasting, Satellites and Railways; as well as policy makers at the EU and Member State level.
Overall the event was successful in stimulating open dialogue and actions across all participants in an informal workshop setting that supported all involved to share their perspectives and experiences from their industry and standardization, and therefore how related processes may well be improved moving forward. Several possible options were discussed in terms of how to deliver improvements, and what corresponding changes to interaction could look like if required. Could this involve further workshops outside of 3GPP which could then drive action within the established channels? Or should there be alteration to vertical and MRP orientated rules of procedure to foster greater contributions?
Moreover, several open tools were discussed for better tracking activity and on-going work to make 3GPP more accessible to those joining, and those already, involved that may experience difficulties in contributing during this important period in the standardization of 5G. The need for such improvements are especially pronounced due to the forthcoming TSG#84 in December 2019, during which the completion of both Rel. 16 upon which 5G will be so dependent, and finalization of the scope for Rel. 17 are both scheduled.
There was a clear consensus among organizational partners and participants that an informal workshop and forum of this type was of use to help stimulate productive discussion on how to proceed with inter-MRP interaction in future.
In light of this, it was proposed that a second event with more focus on practical steps to be taken by 5G vertical industries and SDOs to improve vertical input would be of value, however the setting of this event is yet to be determined; interested Market Representational Partners will be coordinating to decide on the most effective next steps to convert what was valuable dialogue into impactful actions.
Until then, all involved expressed their great thanks to all who contributed to a workshop filled with rich dialogue, and hope based on continuing collaboration that this progress can be built upon over the coming months.

PARIS — July 11, 2018 – The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), the BMW Group, Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F), and Groupe PSA — in association with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, and Savari, Inc. — announced today Europe’s first live demonstration of C-V2X direct communication technology operating across vehicles from multiple auto manufacturers. The live demonstration also featured a live showcase of C-V2X direct communication technology operating between passenger cars, motorcycles, and roadside infrastructure. C-V2X is a global solution for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication in support of improved automotive safety, automated driving and traffic efficiency.
The demonstration exhibited the road safety and traffic efficiency benefits of using C-V2X for Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) collision avoidance, as well as Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) connectivity to traffic signals and Traffic Management Centers (TMC). C-V2X was operated using real-time direct communications over ITS spectrum and demonstrated its ability to work without cellular network coverage, and underscores its commercial readiness for industry deployment as early as 2020. Superior performance and cost-effectiveness compared to other V2X technologies, along with forward-compatibility with 5G, make C-V2X direct communications a preferred solution for C-ITS applications.
Six demonstrations were shown including Emergency Electronic Brake Light, Intersection Collision Warning, Across Traffic Turn Collision Risk Warning, Slow Vehicle Warning and Stationary Vehicle Warning, Signal Phase and Timing / Signal Violation Warning and Vulnerable Road User (pedestrian) Warning. The vehicles involved included two-wheel e-scooters provided by BMW Group, and automotive passenger vehicles provided by Ford, Groupe PSA, and BMW Group, all of which were equipped with C-V2X direct communication technology using the Qualcomm® 9150 C-V2X chipset solution. V2X software stack and application software, along with roadside infrastructure, were provided by industry leader, Savari.
C-V2X is globally supported by a broad automotive ecosystem, which includes the fast growing 5GAA organization. The 5GAA involves over 90 global members comprised of many leading automakers, Tier-1 suppliers, software developers, mobile operators, semiconductor companies, test equipment vendors, telecom suppliers, traffic signal suppliers and road operators.
Cellular modems will be key to the C-V2X deployment in vehicles to support telematics, eCall, connected infotainment and delivering useful driving/traffic/parking information. As C-V2X direct communication functionality is integrated into the cellular modem, C-V2X solutions are expected to be more cost-efficient and economical over competing technologies, and benefit from accelerated attach rates. C-V2X direct communication field validations are currently underway in Germany, France, Korea, China, Japan and the U.S.
C-V2X currently stands as the only V2X technology based on globally recognized 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) specifications, with ongoing evolution designed to offer forward compatibility with 5G. C-V2X also leverages and reuses the upper layer protocols defined by the automotive industry, including the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) organization. C-V2X includes two complementary transmission modes:
- Direct communication as shown in this demonstration for V2V and V2I use cases
- V2N network communication, which leverages mobile operators for connectivity and delivers cloud-based services, including automated crash notification (ACN, as mandated by eCall), hazard warnings, weather conditions, green light optimal speed advisory (GLOSA), parking spot location, and remote tele-operation to support automated driving, to name a few.
“This demonstration builds on the successful C-V2X showcase we organised with our members Audi, Ford and Qualcomm in Washington DC in April” said Christoph Voigt, Chairman of 5GAA.

5GAA to introduce “Connected Mobility in Action” at the Mobile World Congress – Shanghai 2018
The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) will lead the field of connected mobility in the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Shanghai, from 27-29 June 2018.
On Thursday 28 June, the association will host a roundtable discussion with preeminent Chinese government officials. The focus of this forum will be to present their progress in preparing the commercialisation of the Cellular-Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology on China’s roads and to discuss the advances in other regions. This event provides a great opportunity to get updates on the current situation and get important insights from both officials and key industry players.
China has been a trailblazer in adopting C-V2X, remaining at the global forefront of rolling out the technology. Since its founding in 2016, 5GAA has collaborated extensively with Chinese organisations and regulators, leading to a strong working relationship and a large representation of Chinese members within the association.
Beyond discussing the accelerated launch of C-V2X in the Chinese market, the roundtable will further reinforce this relationship, supporting the implementation of connected mobility with cellular-based technologies including the future 5G network.
The MWC Shanghai is the premier industry event in Asia for mobile technology advancement.
