Post-Quantum Cryptography for Automotive – Impact Assessment

The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) and GSMA are pleased to release their new Technical Report “Post-Quantum Cryptography for Automotive – Impact Assessment, a new report examining the potential impact of quantum computing on the security of connected vehicles and automotive communications.

As advances in quantum computing continue, widely used cryptographic methods that underpin today’s digital communications may become vulnerable. This publication assesses the implications of this emerging threat for the automotive sector and explores key considerations for transitioning to post-quantum cryptography across both direct V2X communications and network communications interfaces.

The report analyses how post-quantum cryptography could affect connected vehicle systems, including impacts on computational performance, latency, message size, network efficiency, and long-term vehicle support. It also addresses industry-wide challenges such as legacy vehicle fleets, supply chain coordination, standardisation efforts, and regulatory alignment.

The publication highlights the importance of crypto-agility for future vehicle platforms, the need to address the legacy fleet challenge, and the value of a coordinated industry approach to support a gradual transition towards quantum-resilient automotive communication systems.

Read the report to learn more about the quantum threat to connected vehicles and the automotive industry’s roadmap towards post-quantum security.

About 5GAA

The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) is a global, cross-industry organisation of companies from the automotive, technology, and telecommunications industries (ICT), working together to develop end-to-end solutions for future mobility and transportation services. Created in September 2016, 5GAA has rapidly expanded to include key players with a global footprint in the automotive, technology and telecommunications industries. This includes automotive manufacturers, tier-1 suppliers, chipset/communication system providers, mobile operators and infrastructure vendors.

About the GSMA

The GSMA is a global organisation unifying the mobile ecosystem to unlock the full power of connectivity so that people, industry and society thrive. Led by our members, they represent the interests of over 1,100 operators and businesses in the broader ecosystem. The GSMA also unites the industry at world-leading events, such as MWC (in Barcelona, Kigali, Las Vegas and Shanghai) and the M360 Series.
